This summer, as Olympians competed in Paris, Renkert Oil earned a medal of our own.
In July we officially earned a bronze rating from Ecovadis, putting us in the top 35% of all rated companies. This is based on a detailed scorecard tracking Renkert’s sustainability efforts across a number of different categories.

Ecovadis Sustainability Ratings
Ecovadis was founded in Paris in 2007 with a mission to “provide reliable, globally recognized sustainability ratings and insights, enabling all companies to reduce risk, drive improvement, and accelerate positive impact on our planet and society.”
Since then, they’ve rapidly grown to over 1,700 employees in offices around the world. They’ve screened over 2 million companies, and produced scorecards for more than a quarter million.
Each scorecard tracks a company’s performance by looking at 21 sustainability criteria sorted into four broad categories.
- Environment: This category tracks metrics like a business’s greenhouse gas emissions, their water waste, and the end-of-life environmental impact of their products.
- Labor & Human Rights: Companies are evaluated on how they safeguard their employees’ health and safety, and contribute to their professional development. The impact of the business on third-party stakeholders is also factored in.
- Ethics: How is the business upstanding in its relationships with other businesses in its field? Here Ecovadis takes into account things like what measures are taken to protect against corruption, and whether the firm engages in anticompetitive practices.
- Sustainable Procurement: A company’s environmental impact begins with the suppliers they source from. This category evaluates how a business’s suppliers align with sustainable development goals.
After evaluating Renkert Oil on all these categories, Ecovadis awarded us with a bronze medal and a score that placed us in the top 35 percent of companies they’ve assessed.
Advancing Oil Industry Sustainability
Renkert Oil earned this bronze certification by demonstrating our commitment to each of these four categories. Especially with regard to our environmental impact, Renkert goes to great lengths to ensure our business practices align with sustainability best practices.
- Water Conservation. Renkert doesn’t use water in our processes, so our water waste is nonexistent.
- No Air Pollution. As we specialize in low-volatility oils that don’t evaporate easily, air pollution from our facilities is negligible. We also do not burn waste oil.
- Atmospheric CO2 Reduction. We track and drive down the impact of our logistics on CO2 emissions through efficiencies we build into our transportation methods.
- Product Reuse, Recycling, and Re-refinement. Another way we show our commitment to sustainability is by being a “zero waste supplier.” All of the oil that we bring into our facilities is sold or recycled/re-refined. None is discarded..
Truly Zero-Waste: Sample Recycling
Zero-waste practices apply to every bit of oil in our facilities.
For example, we regularly take samples of our products for quality assurance purposes. After we are done testing and storing these retained products we have to dispose of them.
Even though these samples are as small as a liter, we still make sure they are taken care of sustainably. We combine the samples and send them to re-refiners and oil collectors to be recycled into new premium oils.
Even the glass jars we store the samples in are recycled through local municipal recycling plants.
