Each spring, the American Chemical Society (ACS) Rubber Division gathers polymer scientists, process oil suppliers, academics, and other key players in the elastomer industry to collaborate, learn, and celebrate innovations that move the industry forward.
At this year’s Spring Technical Meeting, held March 4-6, 2025, Renkert Oil proudly continued its tradition of honoring outstanding contributors by sponsoring the Chemistry of Thermoplastic Elastomers (TPE) Award.
We are excited to recognize this year’s recipient, Dr. Takeji Hashimoto, for his groundbreaking research and lasting impact on thermoplastic elastomer science.

Celebrating Excellence in Thermoplastic Elastomer Innovation
Since 1991, the ACS Rubber Division has presented the Chemistry of TPE Award to individuals whose work has advanced the field through significant innovations and commercial or patentable materials.
Renkert Oil has sponsored this prestigious award each year since 2019, aligning with our commitment to supporting scientific progress in TPE development and application.
We are pleased to add Dr. Hashimoto to an esteemed list of past honorees including Gregg Patnode, Dr. Timothy Long, Dr. Lewis Fetters, Dr. Takashi Inoue, and Dr. Glenn Fredrickson.
Dr. Hashimoto’s Contributions to Polymer Science
A professor at Kyoto University and leader of Japan’s ERATO Hashimoto Polymer Phasing Project, Dr. Hashimoto is renowned for his deep investigations into block copolymer systems, particularly styrene-isoprene thermoplastic elastomers.
His research has focused on how polymer structure at the nanoscale influences performance, exploring key factors such as phase behavior, microdomain morphology, and the role of molecular weight in determining material properties.
More About Dr. Hashimoto
- Dr. Hashimoto is especially known for advancing the use of small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to analyze TPE structures, pushing the boundaries of how scientists understand microphase-separated systems.
- His studies on styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) triblock copolymers and poly(ether-block-amide) elastomers have led to insights that inform both material design and real-world application.
- With over 600 citations on key publications, his work has had a lasting influence on TPE manufacturing, providing a foundation for creating next-generation adhesives, coatings, and polymeric components used across industries.
- He has also been recognized with several recent honors, including Research.com’s Materials Science and Chemistry Leader Awards in Japan for both 2023 and 2024.
